"Center Stage" by Brendan Berrigan

¨Center Stage¨

I am the one who comes
to the center of the stage.
Who looks before the audience
and cannot speak.

Not from fear nor from confusion
but from a simple desire to observe.

How does the audience see me.
Do they understand how I feel,
how I think about the world?
Or do they just believe what I tell them

The lies which come as easily as any truth I utter
for even I no longer know the difference.

They cannot be so foolish, can they?
To believe that I am truly the man
whom they see before them.
No lie exists if it cannot be believed.

But they bite as though it is true
as though they cannot see who I am.

But it is no longer I who is on the stage.
Seven billion stages and one seat.
Every audience member a performer
all watching each other and all watching me
