This is a collection of poems written by high school students about their lives. The poems in this section are all confessional poems. Confessional poems are personal poems that are written in the first person point of view. This subgenre emerged in the 1950’s and 60’s and was different because the poems dealt with “taboo” topics that had not been widely discussed in poetry before. Some topics that early confessional poets wrote about were death, relationships, and depression. Confessional poetry was used by some as a form of therapy. Writing about emotions helped people to feel better and find solutions to their problems.
Many of the poems written for this post are about the pressure facing teenagers to be perfect and get everything done in an unrealistic amount of time. This gives readers a glimpse into the society that teenagers live in everyday. Sometimes there is just too much work to do in too little time.
